MY PROCESS

1

I Begin With Intent To Investigate Possible Relationships Of An Idea By A Single Image Sketch Or A Set Of Images Drawn On Lined Or Graph Paper. The Image Or Images Created Are Not Literal Or Figurative But Abstractions.

2

The Constraints Of The Materials Am Working With Are Respected; Acrylic Paint On Square Wood Or Canvas Supports With Sizes From Eight To Twelve Inches. I Also Combine These Supports Into Groupings Of Two, Three Or Four Panels.

3

Designs Use Straight Lines, Arcs And Circles. I Compose By Hand Drafting At Full Scale On Tracing Paper.

4

After Satisfaction With The Composition, I Transfer The Drawing By Drafting Directly Onto The Surface Of A Support Panel Or Canvas. Color Choices Are Based On Warm/Cool; Light/Dark; Bright/Dull Relationships As Applicable.

5

6

Masking Requires A Bit Of Patience As Well As Skill To Lay The Tape Accurately On The Drawn Lines. A Little Practice Helps. Remember, Tape Stretches Slightly And Will Only Be As Accurately Placed As Your Skill Determines.

7

Whatever Medium You Apply To Your Work, It Is Important To Properly Prepare The Surface. I Use At Least Two To Three Coats Of Gesso.

8

Apply Paint With A Brush Or Palette Knife. Put On The Lightest Color First. After Drying, Mask The Next Area For A Darker Color, Etc. Remove The Masking Tape Carefully After Paint Is Completely Dry.

9

On The Back Of The Support, Label The Work, Date And Artist Name.

10

Attach Whatever Hanging Hardware You Typically Use.

11

Determine The Location And Height To Hang The Work. Attach The Work To The Hanger Use A Spirit Level. View The Work Accept Or Reject It For Correction Or Remake.
